Regulations to the Digital Nomads Law published

With the publication of the regulation to the so-called Digital Nomads Law (Executive Decree 43619 H-MGP-TUR), its legal implementation in our country is now possible.

Let's review its main features:


Migratory category

A foreigner who works from Costa Rica for a foreign entity is defined as a digital nomad. Their stay in the country is under the modality of Non-Resident, subcategory of "Remote Worker or Service Provider”.


Application requirements

  1. Submit the on-line application for the migratory category in question.
  2. Demonstrate that he/she renders services to an individual or legal entity located abroad.
  3. Demonstrate an income of at least $3,000.00 per month. If you also want your dependents to have legal migratory status, the minimum income must be $4,000.00.
  4. Have a medical insurance policy covering a minimum of $50,000.00 for the applicant and dependents. .

Applications are expected to be processed within two calendar weeks.


Benefits

Digital nomads who have their immigration status approved have the following benefits:

  1. Income tax exemption
  2. Exoneration of import taxes on equipment required to provide their services (including personal computer, cell phone, tablet, camera, recording device).
  3. They are not considered tax residents in Costa Rica
  4. They are authorized to open bank accounts in the country

Much has been said about how this regulation and its implementation will allow Costa Rica to take advantage of its country brand and the image it has forged abroad as a tourist destination, encouraging people from abroad to come to the country and work from here, with the boost that this can create for coastal tourist areas and communities and for the economy in general.
