As part of the commitments undertaken by ratifying The Free Trade Agreement with The United States, Central America and The Dominican Republic, Costa Rica decided to open its insurance market.
The new Law on Insurance Market Regulation repealed the monopoly on all branches of private insurance and arranged (from the year 2011) the opening of compulsory insurance. Consequently, the Costa Rican insurance market has become very attractive to International Insurance Companies.
